Aleš Strojnik was born on 21 May 1921 in Ljubljana, where he graduated from the Tech- nical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana. He worked as an aircraft designer at the Peter Hribar factory under the mentorship of pro- fessor Anton Kuhelj, who was later his PhD advisor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineer- ing of the University of Ljubljana. After secur- ing a position at the Faculty of Electrical Engi- neering of the same university, he specialised in electron microscopy at the renowned Cav- endish Laboratories at Cambridge University. In 1969 he accepted a position as professor at Arizona State University in Tempe. Stojnik was keenly aware of the importance of inter- national cooperation and his career led him from Sweden and Egypt to Germany, Austral- ia, and the US. He died in Tempe, Arizona, on 6 November 1995 and is buried at Žale Ceme- tery in Ljubljana. 66 His work spans the fields of electronics, electronic op- tics, vacuum technology, pow- er transmission, electrostatics, magnetism, physics, and aircraft design.
