Alongside transport hubs we’ve seen growth in educational institutions and healthcare. With the former, as an example, Kings College London approached us to provide charging stations for their campuses. The challenge here was that students would need units that were capable of charging both smartphones and tablets. This led to the development of larger lockers to securely house a wider range of devices. We now have 26 stations spread over six locations catering to this requirement. In some situations, people may even the visit a shopping centre specifically to charge their phone, which means spending time within the facility during charging. We were the first company of this type back in 2005 with a field-tested prototype, and the first production machines providing a service by 2006. But being first doesn’t make you a world leader. Over the years we’ve produced more than 2000 units, and a high percentage of the second generation charging stations are currently in use and connected to our servers. What makes us world leader is that over five million devices around the globe are charged every year using ChargeBox stations. We don’t think anyone else comes close to that. We’re keen to prove the service is much more than just the kiosk – it’s everything behind it. We track every charge to ensure security and ultimately improve the service for users. Another way we differ is that we don’t want to be associated with distress purchases where users pay a high fee to charge their device.
