Music Generation Wicklow had a busy summer making music across the county. Our week long camp in Blessington involved 37 young musicians playing and learning traditional music on a wide variety of instruments and was located in the Blessington Further Education Centre. Meanwhile in the east of the county we rocked the boards in St. Kilian’s Community School ,Bray, with 22 musicians forming bands and learning about playing together and composing.
Our newly purchased Samba Drums were put to good use in two camps, one as part of Little Bray Community Centre Summer Project and the other based in Bray and open to all young drummers!
Entering our new academic year we are delighted that we currently have 33 musician/tutors delivering music in 34 schools around the county. We also have several out of school programmes such as Recorder Ensembles, Dunlavin Strings violin group, a new Jazz Ensemble, a band and composers club in Wicklow town and we have just begun working with Bray and North Wicklow Youthreach Centre delivering guitar tuition.
Another exciting development is the establishment of a Music Hub in Blessington housed in the Further Education Centre. Here we deliver tuition in a variety of instruments to under 18’s. Our Traditional group also plays here and we have a fully equipped rehearsal space which can be accessed by young musicians and bands to practice or record their music. Music Generation Wicklow is a low cost music education service for children and young people in the county. It is part of Music Generation – Ireland’s National Music Education Programme initiated by Music Network and co-funded by U2; The Ireland Funds; the Department of Education & Skills and Local Music Education Partnership; Kildare and Wicklow Education and Training Board and Wicklow County Council.
