Working in Further Education - Challenging and demanding but rewarding....

Being able to discuss and get help from fellow tutors and the ALO enables me to tailor lessons to each student’s requirements and to fill the gaps in my own knowledge. It’s lifelong learning for both of us.

Resource worker in the Adult Literacy Service – challenging and demanding but rewarding

As a part time resource worker, I assist the organiser in running the centre and am there to support the tutors and students in whatever way I can and whatever needs may arise. Unfortunately, a large part of my work is administration based - QQI accreditation, finance related, corporate governance and H & S. Promotion and advertising is an important aspect of the job and is very time consuming. The challenge to continually make the public aware of the service and courses being offered takes a lot of time and creative thinking; regrettably, results do not always reflect the effort and time invested.

The biggest (and best) part of my job, as a resource worker, is dealing with people – members of the public, students, tutors and staff of KWETB. Confidence building is interwoven into all the work that is done here in the Centre. Initial assessment allows me to meet the students and identify the appropriate class and level where learners’ needs will best be met. The humanistic ethos underpins the way we work, as an adult literacy service; the potential of each person is recognised and nurtured. Respect and genuine interest for each person, along with commitment to maintain the high standard of our work, colours all we do. Each day, laced with humour, co-operation and hard work is different. It will come as no surprise that working in such an environment is stimulating, fulfilling and a privilege.
