Rocking Adulthood

How prepared are your children for the next phase of their lives ... adulthood ?

by Kylie Bailey

At what age did you start having the conversation with your children of what do you want to be when you grow up ?

Our whole childhood after all is to prepare us for the next phase of our lives which is adulthood and what we want to spend our lives doing , what quality of life do we want to have , how do we want to contribute to society and our community and how satisfied do we want to feel on a day to day basis .
We spend a childhood learning at school – academics , social skills & resilience . Through our contribution in teams at extracurricular activities , it teaches our kids to be part of something fun and enjoyable which gives them a hunger for success and to be a great team player , whether in a club / school or for your team mates . All the afternoons enforcing homework to be completed , we are teaching our kids discipline and the art of ‘ practise , practise , practise ’. We hope by instilling these values , our children will be better skilled through life and the feeling of achievement will give them the confidence to achieve all their dreams .
We all have the same wish as parents , and that ’ s for our children ’ s happiness , they try their best and they believe in themselves . No doubt we all want our children to have the best life and they take the easy road through life and stay off the path of dysfunction .
As our children lead into their late teens , they start to not need us as much and the letting go period continues for parents which can be difficult however our children ’ s future is all that matters , and we are always waiting in the wings ... All our love , time and dedication of raising a well balanced young adult is upon us and now it ’ s up to our most treasured people to make a great life for themselves in their chosen career path .
At times no doubt , we will think we know what ’ s best for them when they start making the big life decisions that seem wrong in our book .
Saying this , I ’ m sure if your honest with yourself as adults looking back on time I think the clear majority of us would say we would love our time over again and how different we would do it if we had the chance for a ‘ do over ’ however that ’ s what being young is all about – learning , growing and the lessons of our youth .
So how do we steer our children / teens on the pathway to greatness and lead them to their dream life and help them find what they want to do with their lives .
Its vitally important to spark their interest ’ s while they ’ re young . All the options and choices they have in their lives and career , even though they may change their mind from year to year ... There is absolutely no harm in gentle conversation about what they want to be when they grow up and keep this momentum going as this will be part of the journey to finding their niche .
Whether an academic , a sporty type or creative type , everyone has their gift and deciding how to invoke that into your life is key to a successful beginning to Adulthood .
Teen Coaching can benefit in many ways
• The power of goal setting
• Tapping into strengths & interests
• How to break the bad habits
• Creating a clear pathway & utilising these skills
• Mapping out the first chapter of Adulthood to achieve your dreams
• Self belief & the power of positive thinking
• How to sell yourself at interviews and preparation for the workforce
• Learning about survival and intermediate jobs
• The art of good organisation and time management . Learning life skills is so important for the younger generation of today . As a recruiter of 14 years and life , career & youth coach , it frightens me to see how many young people are entering Adulthood shell-shocked at the responsibility they now have and no idea what to do with their lives ... It also saddens me to see some of the best years of their lives wasted in their youth as they struggle to find happiness and their purpose .
The first chapter of adulthood should be celebrated with first jobs , first holidays , first home away from home , first loves ... setting up their independence for a happy and successful life .
Some kids just know what they want to do , and some need gentle advice , guidance and support .
Setting the foundation is pivotal to –
