In this report you will find information about KICA’s upcoming 2015 Annual Meeting
and a look back at last year’s highlights. This year the association will elect one new director
to its seven-member board. The association’s board consists of six elected members of the
community and one appointed developer representative.
Board Candidate
Information

Sue Schaffer is completing her three-year term and will leave the board after the Annual
Meeting. She has been an extremely valuable board member, serving this last year as vicechair and previously as board secretary. Sue also chaired the board’s Amenities Committee
and served on the Governance Committee. She has brought perspective, energy and a keen
interest in Kiawah to the board, and will be missed.
Although my three-year term is also finished, I will remain on the board as chair for a
second year. In 2013 the board amended the association’s by-laws to require board chairs to
serve for two years, even if this extends the individual’s total term past three years.
The association employed a nominating committee for the second year in 2014. This
process resulted in nominating Bruce Stemerman to serve as a director. The enclosed report includes information about
Bruce. Please review the report and submit your vote by either voting online or returning the enclosed ballot.
KICA Year in Review

This past year has been an eventful and successful year for KICA. The most significant action by the board was to develop
concepts for improving the amenities available to KICA’s members. This effort was a continuation of a multi-year process.
A committee consisting of KICA board members and community representatives worked with an outside consultant, The
McMahon Group, and presented amenities concepts to the membership last spring. The board surveyed the entire KICA
membership on these concepts to gauge interest in making, and funding, possible improvements. The survey results, published
in summer 2014, expressed strong community interest in upgrading the existing pool, beach and fitness capabilities. Since
that time, the board has engaged various consultants to help turn these concepts into more specific proposals that will be
submitted to the membership for a vote this spring (for more information, see page 8).
Upcoming Events

The KICA board and staff have also focused on other ways to improve service to members. Under Chief Operating
Officer Jimmy Bailey’s leadership, KICA instituted a shuttle service to provide members with convenient access to the
greater Charleston area and beyond. KICA upgraded the food and beverage operations at the Sandcastle, facilitated the
opportunity for members to buy fresh, local seafood on summer Fridays, and started a backflow inspection service. New
communications platforms such as text alerts, the KICA mobile app, expanded social media and new user-friendly website
gave members more ways to stay connected. All of these initiatives have been very well received. KICA continued to
invest heavily in the island’s infrastructure, including landscape capital improvements. The effort to enhance the island’s
appearance and maintenance standards will continue in 2015.
All of these efforts have the common theme of investing in Kiawah, both to enhance members’ current experiences and,
importantly, to support real estate values.
Kiawah Cares
Year in Review

Finally, KICA has continued to support members’ involvement in the broader Sea Islands community through its very
successful Kiawah Cares community outreach program. This program continues to help meet community needs on Johns
Island and Wadmalaw islands. KICA achieved public foundation status for Kiawah Cares in 2014, which will facilitate
further philanthropic activity in 2015.
Your board hopes to see many of you at the Annual Meeting on Friday, March 6 at 2 p.m. at the Sandcastle, as well as
at the annual Celebrate Kiawah event on Saturday, April 25 at the Sandcastle.
