KICA Annual Reports 2013 | Page 2

2 Message from the Chair Page 2 Meeting Essentials Page 3 In this report you will find information about the 2013 KICA Annual Meeting. Each year the association elects two directors to its board. As a reminder, the association’s board is comprised of six members of the community and one developer representative. The “member” directors serve rotating three-year terms. Joan Avioli and I are completing our terms and will leave the board after the annual meeting in March. Joan has been an invaluable contributor to the community and the board, and will be missed. She has been especially involved with the creation of KICA’s Kiawah Cares program and expanding our involvement with the local community, particularly Johns and Wadmalaw islands. We again have two excellent candidates for member director, Larry Kreyling and Will Lehder, and I thank them for their willingness to offer their time and energy to the community. Please review the enclosed report, which includes information about each candidate and a review of 2012, and submit your votes for director by either voting online or returning the enclosed ballot. The past year was a good one for Kiawah Island and the community association. The highlight of the year was undoubtedly the PGA Championship, which the resort hosted in August at the Ocean Course. Both on-island visitors and TV viewers saw the quality of life that Kiawah offers. The community came together to show that Kiawah is more than capable of hosting an event of this magnitude. From a KICA perspective, I could not be more pleased with how hard the association staff worked to ensure that the island looked its best and with the pride that employees showed in his or her efforts. Candidate Bios Page 4 - 6 Kiawah continued to be recognized during the year for our beaches, the quality of the community, and even for our “happiness.” Our reputation served us well during the national economic downturn, as other communities suffered more significant declines. It continues to contribute to a steady enhancement of property values and new investments in the community. Kiawah Partners is moving forward with the development of Ocean Park and as the economy improves we look forward to seeing KIGR evaluate development options for its properties, especially at West Beach and the former site of the old inn. Year in Review Page 7 - 17 Over the past year we have continued to strengthen the KICA organization, including the hiring of Jimmy Bailey as our new chief operating officer. We have considered steps to stabilize our revenue, thereby assuring that KICA can maintain our community in the manner members expect. We are assessing the adequacy of our amenities and facilities with the intent of having specific recommendations for members to consider during the next year. We are aligning our efforts more closely with other major island entities for the benefit of our members. And finally, we are working with our members to improve Kiawah’s involvement in the broader Johns and Wadmalaw island communities through the Kiawah Cares program. All of these actions are ongoing and will benefit from your input and involvement. Your board continues to focus on several priorities: first, that the association remains financially sound with stable revenue sources; second, that it be well-managed; third, that we protect and enhance the unique “Kiawah brand,” which enables the quality of life we experience on Kiawah. To this end, KICA will continue to emphasize maintaining the community with high standards, facilitating the revitalization of older areas of the island and aging infrastructure, and making needed new investments in the infrastructure and facilities available to our members. Upcoming Events Page 18 - 19 Finally, last year we moved the annual Celebrate Kiawah event to April to take advantage of warmer weather. The change was well received and this year’s Celebrate Kiawah will be held on April 27. This year we are also making a change to the Annual Meeting date, moving it from its typical Sunday date to a Friday (March 8). On behalf of the KICA board and staff, I hope to see you there.
