2 May 2017 March 2018 5 Resort Improvements Planned (Continued From Previous Page) pro shop will be expanded to include full locker rooms and shower facilities. The resort hopes to open the tennis center in the summer, when the tennis facilities at West Beach close. West Beach Plans for West Beach are less immediate, but well underway. They include the new Cougar Point Golf Course clubhouse (pictured on previous page) to be constructed first; imminent razing and then redevelopment of the now-closed Straw Market; and a state-of-the-art conference center. The new clubhouse is being designed by Robert A. M. Stern, designer of the Ocean Course clubhouse, and will feature a classical revival style. The conference center will boast a large ballroom, numerous breakout rooms, and cutting edge technology. Look for a formal announcement by the resort about its plans for West Beach, and details in Digest, in the coming months. Once the construction at West Beach is complete, the resort expects to demolish the existing East Beach conference center. That land will be vacant pending future development. Bryan assures us that the popular East Beach Market will remain open “for the foreseeable future.” Article contributed by Digest Feature Reporter Sue Schaffer. Traffic Impacts Expected During Cougar Point Construction Due to the ongoing construction of the Cougar Point clubhouse, there will be traffic adjustments to sections of Kiawah Beach Drive and Shipwatch Drive. Phase 1 (pictured below, left) will include the construction of a traffic circle near Shipwatch Road. During this phase, traffic will be re-routed around construction areas (construction areas are highlighted in red, traffic patterns in green). During Phase 2 (pictured below, right), the traffic circle will open and a temporary roadway will be used for through traffic (construction areas highlighted in red, traffic patterns in green). Full maps can be viewed at kica.us/cougarpointconstruction. Phase 1: Mid-March through Mid-August In addition to the traffic rerouting plan, there will be periodic lane closures as utility work is required. Kiawah Island Utility and KICA have asked for at least 24-hour notice if utilities are disrupted or traffic lanes will be closed, so that members may be notified in advance. Phase 1 is expected to take place from mid-March through mid-August, with Phase 2 beginning in mid-August, lasting through mid-November. Schedules are subject to change. Updates will be shared through Digest and KICA's weekly news emails as improvements are made and work progresses. To sign up for KICA weekly news updates, visit kica.us/signup.
