Our World March 2017 Presentation Series

Our World is a complimentary educational lecture series produced by KICA that provides members with presentations by local experts on a wide variety of subjects . A light selection of wine and cheese will be provided and members are encouraged to interact with speakers following their discussions .
Our World : Wayne McAfee March 2 at 3 p . m ., Sandcastle Wayne McFee is a research wildlife biologist at the NOAA / National Ocean Service ’ s Center for Coastal Environmental Health and Biomolecular Research ( CCEHBR ).
Marine debris , in particular plastics , are a continuing problem for marine wildlife species . The overall health effects to individual species or local populations is largely unknown . Similarly , very little is known about the prevalence of microplastics , defined as < 5 mm in size , in wildlife populations , specifically cetaceans . This presentation will describe the potential role microplastics have in bottlenose dolphin health and the collaborative research being conducted between the College of Charleston and the National Ocean Service .
Our World : Max Kovalov , PHD March 23 at 4 p . m ., Sandcastle Max Kovalov , PHD , works in the Department of Political Science / International Studies Program at the College of Charleston . During his presentation , he will touch on the following topics ;
• Biographical information on Putin , including his rise to power
• The nature of the Russian regime , e . g ., the conflict between authoritarianism and democracy
• Reasons behind Putin ' s very strong popularity with the Russian people
• What might Putin ' s actions in the Ukraine and Syria signal for future Russian actions / policies
• Address the Trump / Putin relationship
• Any personal insights / perspectives given your citizenship as a Ukranian
