Cooperation Key in Kiawah Beach Drive Project
If you live in West Beach or have been to the Sandcastle in recent
months, you probably noticed some work going on along Kiawah kica.us (News and Updates/Videos)
Beach Drive. In fact, between the large pieces of equipment and the Check out the Kiawah Beach
temporary floating cart-path bridge, it was nearly impossible to miss. Drive project video, featuring an

Director William Connor.
“Last summer we discovered a sinkhole in the road over one of the

pipes, and after that was repaired, another sinkhole started to form”
explained KICA Major Repairs Director Will Connor. “Sinkholes of this sort inevitably indicate a hole in the
drainage pipes and, given the age of the pipes (they were installed in the '70s) and the critical location, the
decision was made to repair them as soon as possible.”
The pipes in question are part of three existing 54 inch corrugated metal pipes that pass under Kiawah Beach
Drive, connecting Pond 007 on the east side of the road to Pond 003 on the west side. Instead of excavating the
roadway and shoulders and entirely replacing the pipes, they were sliplined. This process places a smaller section
of pipe through the existing pipes. The void between the two different-sized pipes is then grouted for structural
stability and to prevent further leaks through the metal pipes.
“Because the drainage system is submerged, cofferdams made with driven sheet steel piles had to be constructed
in each pond to keep the work site dewatered through the life of the project,” said Connor. “Also, a barge bridge
was constructed to allow continuous and safe golf traffic through the life of the project. All of this planning really
kept disruptions to a minimum while maintaining the safety and integrity of the project site.”
The project, which was completed in mid-February, highlights not only the work of KICA staff and contractors,
but also cooperation with other entities such as the Kiawah Island Golf Resort (KIGR).
“This project was crucial to maintaining a vital portion of our island’s drainage system,” said KICA Director of
Operations Shannon White. “I’d like to thank our staff and our contractor JA Rauch Construction for their hard
work and tireless efforts during this major project. Also, thanks to Brian Gerard, Ric Ferguson and Brad French
with KIGR for their patience as we worked at Cougar Point.”

Kiawah Beach Drive Project Video First of Many
As part of an ongoing effort to connect KICA property owners, near and far, with Kiawah Island, the association has launched a new video
service for its members. Starting with a great video on the Kiawah Beach Drive maintenance project, featuring an interview with KICA
Major Repair Directory Will Connor, KICA will be producing and publishing videos of all things Kiawah. The videos will be available
through the KICA YouTube channel (youtube.com/kiawahisland1976) and website (kica.us). Be sure to visit those spots to check out the
Kiawah Beach Drive project video and subscribe to our YouTube channel for future videos.
