Summer is here, yet before you know it, the fall school semester will be upon us. As we approach the
new school year, Kiawah Cares (KC) is turning its attention to elementary school students in the Sea
Islands that need our help.
In 2013, KC partnered with Angel Oak Elementary (AOE) and Kiawah Women’s Group (then Alternatives) to
obtain sponsors for AOE's students, named for their mascot, the wise owl. Many of AOE's owls can’t afford the
required expenses of student life. By “adopting” an owl for the school year, sponsors gave those students school
supplies, a clean, new uniform and meals to take home each weekend through a backpack buddy program
called Owl Packs. Teachers and school officials reported such a marked improvement in the confidence and
attentiveness of the children that KC has expanded the program for the 2014-2015 school year to include
Frierson Elementary on Wadmalaw Island. Frierson is a small school with very limited resources so for them a
little help goes a long way. Both are Title I schools, meaning the students are from a high-poverty group, serving
pre-kindergarten to fifth graders.
A $200 donation is all it takes to Adopt an Owl (Angel Oak) or Adopt an Elf (Frierson), and your
donation will support one child for an entire year. KC would also like to thank the many repeat owl
sponsors! If you haven’t yet told us you’d like to keep your child for next year, please let us know so we
don’t pair them with another sponsor.
The school will provide a tax receipt. To sponsor a child, please contact [email protected] for complete details.

Children Take to the Beach
Fourth grade students from Angel Oak Elementary school completed service work and were rewarded with a day at Kiawah's beach sponsored
by Kiawah Cares on May 29. Eleven Kiawah islanders volunteered to chaperone the children, and staff from KICA were on-hand to educate the
students on Kiawah's natural habitat. For more photos, visit Kiawah Cares on Facebook (facebook.com/kiawahcares). Photos by Ralph J. Secoy.
