KICA Approves Study on Island Drainage System
With over 115 lakes on the island connected by 49 miles of drainage
pipes, maintenance of this complex system is critically important. As the
island’s drainage infrastructure ages, KICA is increasing its pipe repair/
replacement. Before embarking on these projects over the next decade,
however, KICA needs to understand its current drainage capacities
and whether they are adequate. To aid in this analysis, at its November
meeting the KICA Board of Directors approved a hydrologic study on
Kiawah’s elaborate drainage infrastructure.
“This study is critcally important for ensuring the proper operation of
a vital piece of our island’s infrastructure,” said KICA Chief Operating
Officer Jimmy Bailey. “The findings of this study will play a large
part in the decisions made as to the method of how pipe sections are
repaired/replaced.”
The $75,000 study will take approximately six months, beginning
this year. The first $25,000 of the project cost was approved as an
unbudgeted reserve expense for 2013, with the remaining $50,000
approved as part of the 2014 budget.

Pipe Repair Project Set to Begin on Kiawah Beach Drive
One of the island’s more traveled
roadways is about to undergo
construction.
Starting on Monday, Dec. 2, an
extensive project will begin on
Kiawah Beach Drive to repair
three damaged drainage pipes
that travel underneath the road.
The $325,000 repair project is
expected to be complete before
the Christmas holiday.
In June, an open sinkhole and secondary road depression were noted on
the inbound lane of Kiawah Beach Drive. The sinkhole was caused by a
hole in one of the three 54-inch metal drainage pipes located under the
road. These pipes, located between ponds 3 and 7, are part of the main
drainage system for the front half of the island.
