About Kiawah Cares

Since 2011 , Kiawah Cares Community Outreach ( KC ) has touched the lives of many in the neighboring communities of Johns and Wadmalaw islands . Dedicated to the collective strength of our communities , KC focuses on easing the burden that poverty often places on rural families . KC works through nonprofits , schools and faith-based organizations that serve the Sea Islands . Past efforts include employment skills training , tutoring and sponsorships for at-risk children , coordinating activities for seniors and veterans , and more .
In the 2015 - 2016 fiscal year , KC volunteers dedicated over 500 hours of their time to various Sea Island initiatives . The Kiawah Cares Foundation ( KCF ) and Kiawah property owners also aided more than 4,600 Sea Islanders by supporting programs to improve their quality of life .
The assistance and support KC volunteers continue to provide is essential yet , in many cases , what these organizations truly lack is funding . In 2014 , the KCF received 501 ( c ) 3 charitable organization status to serve as the outreach program ’ s funding arm . In the summer of 2016 , KCF gave $ 36,000 contributed by property owners to summer literacy programs on Johns and Wadmalaw islands .
Education is an important indicator of future success . Children who live at poverty level often come to school at a disadvantage , arriving with far more intensive needs than their middle-class and affluent counterparts . All five Sea Island public schools are designated Title I schools - a significant number of children are from low-income families .
In response to these needs , KCF has designated these schools and the 501 ( c ) 3 Communities In Schools ( CIS ) as our 2017 feature partners . The CIS Student Support program is active in all five island schools , working to address basic and behavioral needs in order to help children learn and teachers teach .
