BACKGROUND FOR THE FACILITATOR
Resilience:
You promote resilience if you take the child to the doctor to see if anything was wrong. When nothing was found wrong, you would
accompany the child to school.
Your daughter may confide to you the real reason why she did not want to go to school. You would try to help her overcome her fear
and give her a number of suggestions, such as: ignore the children or walk with some friends. Your daughter would follow your advice,
but would feel ashamed if you continued to accompany her to school.
SCENARIO 3
You discover contraceptive pills in your 16-year-old daughter's cupboard.
Task:
Note to facilitator: Explain the scenario to the mothers.
Discussion: Ask the mothers how they would deal with the above-mentioned situation.
BACKGROUND FOR THE FACILITATOR
Resilience:
You could talk to your daughter first and calmly ask her why she has contraceptive pills in her cupboard. You could then talk to your
child and find out if she is sexually active and what her knowledge is about sex and sexually-transmitted diseases. Find out if she is
also taking other precautions. Try not to moralise or to be angry. Talk to your child about the consequences of having sex and give
her the assurance that you will always be there if she wants to talk to you about anything. Let her know that you don't support her
behaviour, but that you love her.
ASSESSMENT
Reflect in the group. What have they learnt about their child's development?
APPLICATION IN PRACTICE
Mothers are asked to continue with the task of taking 15 minutes or more a day to spend with their children; to give them a hug, to
tell them they love them and play with them.
CLOSURE
Discuss the way forward and preparation for next session. Next week's session addresses how a child sees HIV. Discuss the children's
group session. In this session the children practised different important household skills needed in everyday life.
CHILDREN'S HOMEWORK
Your child was asked to demonstrate to you the new tasks she or he has learnt by observing her or his friends doing this task in the
session. Remember to praise your child.
