Session 9 SESSION 9: KNOWING AND UNDERSTANDING MYSELF AS A PARENT (PARENTING SKILLS) (PART 1) OBJECTIVES The following objectives are set for Session 9: At the end of the session the women should - have a general understanding of what parenting is; - be able to distinguish between good and bad parenting; - be able to identify different parenting styles; - have a basic knowledge of how to take care of a child; - as a parent, display good listening skills; - have a general understanding of what it means to discipline a child; - have acquired positive discipline strategies that set limits and encourage independence; - be able to utilise natural and logical consequences to redirect behaviour; and - be able to identify and deal with problems. PREPARATION - Prepare for the discussion. Take yourself mentally through the type of questions that can be raised and reflect on how to facilitate the group, so that the core concepts can be addressed.
