SESSION 7:
COPING, PROBLEM-SOLVING AND STRESS
MANAGEMENT
OBJECTIVES
The following objectives are set for Session 7:
At the end of the session the women should
-
have strengthened or developed coping skills;
-
be able to distinguish between changeable and non-changeable situations;
-
know how to apply problem-solving skills to an existing problem; and
-
know how to deal with feelings of stress through relaxation techniques.
PREPARATION
Prepare for the discussion. It is important that you take yourself mentally through the process
of the type of questions that can be raised and reflect on how to facilitate the group, so that
the core concepts can be addressed. People living with HIV have to deal with a lot of stress,
and this session is extremely important to give the members of the group tools on how to
handle the stress of having HIV. The facilitator should practise the relaxation techniques before
the session.
MATERIALS
The following will be needed for this session:

Paper and pen to take the register and for notes on the session

Music for relaxation exercise and CD player

Hand-outs on problem-solving and relaxation exercises

Paper for ice-breaker
