SESSION 4:
HIV AND RELATIONSHIPS
OBJECTIVES
The following objectives are set for Session 4:
At the end of the session the women should
-
have discussed difficult situations in their intimate relationships;
-
have discussed condom use and the negotiation of condom use; and
-
have considered the position of women in the community and what they
could do to look after themselves and promote their own health.
PREPARATION
Prepare for the discussion. It is important that you take yourself mentally through
the process of the type of questions that can be raised and reflect on how to facilitate
the group, so that the core concepts can be addressed. Many women are infected
by their partners, and this session could bring up some difficult emotions; so it is
important that the facilitator must be sensitive to this process, and allows the group
to share their stories.
MATERIALS
The following will be needed for this session:

Paper and pen to take the register and for notes on the session.

Invoice book and money for travelling expenses.

Paper and two containers for the ice-breaker

Condoms (female and male)

Model of male sexual organ

OUTLINE OF THE SESSION

Acknowledge the group, welcoming and apologies.

Open the group session according to the group norms set: for example, did
the group decide to open with a prayer? Before commencing with the group
session, briefly discuss the previous session.

Get feedback from the group on anything they feel that they want to share
with the group. Ask about any highlights or negative experiences: did they
