SESSION 1:
INTRODUCTION, ORIENTATION AND RELATIONSHIPS OF TRUST
OBJECTIVES
The following objectives are set for Session 1
At the end of the session the women should
have an understanding of the norms and expectations of the group;
have an understanding of their role in the group;
have an understanding of the facilitator's role in the group;
have a general understanding of the functioning of a support group;
have a general understanding of the content of the group sessions; and
feel comfortable to contribute in group discussions.
PREPARATION
Prepare for the discussion. It is important that you take yourself mentally through the process
of the type of questions that can be raised, and reflect on how to facilitate the group so that
the core concepts can be addressed. In the first session it is extremely important to make the
members feel comfortable and accepted. It is possible that the women may be disclosing
their status for the first time, and it is important that the facilitator is sensitive to this. In all
sessions the facilitator should be prepared for sensitive and emotional discussion.
MATERIALS
The following will be needed for this session:

Consent forms
Paper and a pen to take the register and for notes on the session
Invoice book and money for traveling expenses
Whiteboard and marker to take down rules, needs, WF2
