"Let us go back to the dam. Maybe we will see more ducks," Suria suggested. The children ran towards the dam leaving the fire burning. They began to play near the dam and forgot about the fire. After some time Puli noticed a cloud of smoke coming from the place where they had made the fire. "Fire!" he cried. "Let's run away," Suria screamed. "Wait let's not run away. Let's take a few minutes to think what we can do. Our favourite spot will be burnt if we run away," Linda said. "Let us go back to play. Forget about the fire," said Puli. "No," shouted Joseph. "Fire can be dangerous. I will call Grandmother." Joseph started running towards their home. Discuss the story and discuss the following points in detail: Discussion - It is important here to realise that we need to see further than the problem. Sometimes we need to call others to help us, but there may not be enough time. We need to think fast and we also need to see the choices/options that we have in the situation. We have Obvious options and Hidden options. Ask the children to point these out in the story. Sometimes when we can't find the hidden or obvious options, we can get plans from other people. We also need to learn to say 'No' appropriately. We have a break halfway through the session, during which the children can go to the bathroom. ACTIVITY 4 : ROLE PLAY Role play Aim: To practise problem-solving skills, creativity, imagination, team spirit, group cohesion and self-confidence. Materials needed: Puppets and stage Time: 20 minutes Instructions: -Ask the children to get into groups (not more than 3 in a group) and to think up a story they will present to the rest of the group later on. Show them the characters they may choose from. -Set up a stage for the puppet play. -Ask the children to play out a situation where they have a problem and how they would solve that problem. -Give the children enough time to work on their story. -Let them present their puppet play to you and the rest of the group. -Before the puppet play starts, agree that no one may be laughed at unless the story is funny. If the story is serious, talk to the children about what happened in the play. (Facilitator: Observe carefully and give feedback of every child's strengths.) Climbing up the Tree exercise BACKGROUND FOR THE FACILITATOR It is important to note that children get frustrated when they are faced with a problem, as they do not have the skills to solve them. It is therefore important that you show and encourage the children to use these skills. ASSESSMENT Is it possible for the children to think of alternatives when they are faced with a problem? Can they make decisions and solve the problems that they are faced with? HOMEWORK Ask the children to tell their mothers the story of ‘The man in the hole’.
