ACTIVITY 3 - PUPPET PLAY (SCENARIOS)
Puppet play and coping
Aim: To identify stressors and how to cope with these stressors. To ask questions and asking for help.
Materials needed: Puppets and cards with scenarios
Instructions:
Through the use of puppets, the facilitator role plays the scenarios so that the children identify the problems and think through
alternatives to solve such problems.
Scenarios: (replace the word 'puppet' with the appropriate name).

The puppet doesn't know how to swim, and all the other puppets laugh at it for not being able to swim. How does the puppet
handle this situation?

The puppet has homework and doesn't know how to answer the difficult questions. What does the puppet do?

The mother asks the puppet to look after its brother or sister. How does the puppet do that?

The puppet has a family member who is very sick and need to go to the hospital immediately. The puppet is the only person
home. What can the puppet do to help?

The puppet is feeling very lonely, because it is its first day at its new school. What can the puppet do to make friends?

Ask the children to name all things the puppet could do in all the above situations.

Ask the children how they would handle the above situations.
BACKGROUND FOR THE FACILITATOR
It is important to develop the concept that people are alike, yet different from one another in more than one dimension. Children
often focus only on similarities and differences in physical appearance, and need to be invited to consider other aspects of the person.
ASSESSMENT
-Could the children make a link between their own
strengths and coping with difficulties?
-Were the children able to cope with the stressors
set up in this session?
HOMEWORK
Ask the children to take their body map home and
to show their mothers what they did in the session.
Encourage the children to discuss their body maps
and the strengths they pasted or drew onto the body
map with their mothers.
