Cover Story
Keystone’s residential program is one of the defining elements of the school. Enshrined as one of
three keystones, the school aims to build character and community throughout our residential
setting. A US-style boarding initiative, it intentionally weaves together norms of coexistence rooted
in the five Confucian values of compassion, honesty, respect, justice and wisdom. It has not only
become a second home, or home-away-from-home, for our residential students and faculty, but
has also evolved into a family and community. Though staying on campus is mandatory from
grade 9, several students from grades 7 and 8 have also chosen to be part of the residential
community. Boarding students and faculty on campus rely on and support each other just like with
one’s own family. A supervisory and care system that starts with one’s own roommate, and goes all
the way to a dorm head on each floor ensures and enables individual development and collective
growth. This is not just a program; it is a place that Keystone’s residential community has come to
recognize as home, with people – both adults and peers – they have come to consider as family,
brought together for the purpose of living and learning as a community. This is a two-part cover
story. This article is followed by two more – one by Phoebe Sun and another by Vincent Liu. These
high school residential students share their own personal experiences of living on campus.
