Grade 10 Lay Out their Canvas
for the Future

he chubby, cherub-
like face of a child
looks up at you,
but her eyes are
clenched shut, as if
begging for mercy.
And you suddenly notice that
she is a fish. This gripping piece
of art is the clay sculpture of
grade 10 student, Alice Zhang
who wanted to portray the
suffering and discrimination
against young girls with a
unique focus on, and dedica-
tion to the many that have
been killed by drowning in riv-
ers because of unsubstantiated
superstitions, stigma or other in-
human sociocultural practices.
Art is not only illocutionary po-
etry, but it is also a window to
the heart and soul of the artist.
And as you wander through the
middle and high school end-
of-term art exhibition, you see
and feel so much more. You see
the students’ trials, their fric-
tions with hard-hitting realities,
their progress, their moments
of reflection, their jolts of hesita-
