the Wild Side:
Grade 2 Explores the Rainforests
W
alk into the
grade 2
classrooms,
and you
may feel
like you are
in the middle of a rainforest.
Vines and different species of
animals made out of decora-
tive paper cover the classroom
ceilings, giving the students
an almost life-like ambience –
perfect for the current IPC unit
on ‘Saving The World,’ focused
on the theme of rainforests. The
big idea of the unit is centered
on exposing students to the
nature of such forests, how and
why they are important to our
planet, and what students can

do to save this rapidly diminish-
ing resource of our world.
One of the grade 2 students,
Sam Fang, knew what he could
do from a trip he made to Bor-
neo – a rainforest straddled be-
tween Malaysia, Indonesia and
Brunei. He gave his classmates
an impressive presentation
about his trip, told them what
he saw, and what he learned.
Excited by t he photos in their
classmate’s presentation, they
keenly probed Sam further for
more details.
These eager explorers will con-
tinue getting to know the rain-
forests through subjects such as
