School News Roundup Victory Strokes at Regional Swimming Competition Students Inspired by Visiting Olympic Swim Champion In March 2015, Keystone hosted 2012 Olympic Swimming Champion and record holder, Jiao Liuyang, as part of the school’s Inspiration Series. Ms. Jiao spoke to an audience of students, parents and teachers about her training, practice sessions and victory at the 2012 Olympics. “It is not easy,” she reminded students as she spoke about winning. “If you want to live your dream and achieve it, you have to face difficulties and losses, and overcome them.” Jiao Liuyang was in her element when she dived into the school swimming pool and demonstrated her winning stroke. In the first academic year alone, students have had several opportunities through the Keystone Inspiration Series to meet the best in various fields, such as renowned cellist Feng Yao, Chinese educator and scholar Li Jiasheng, Physical Chemist and President of one of the top Liberal Arts colleges in the U.S., Pomona College’s Dr. David Oxtoby, among others. Making a Mark at the Regional Math Competition In April 2015, the team of six – three each from grades 8 and 9 – made Keystone history with their second place win in their very first participation at the North East Asian Math Competition (NEAMC). Their middle school Math teacher, Yang Zhaohui, who trained them for the competition, remarked how everyone at the competition will not forget Keystone. The contestants were Winston Jiang, Jack Peng and Tony Wang from grade 9 and Paul Pu, David Zhang and Jason Wang from grade 8. They performed well in both the individual and team rounds. Out of more than 100 contestants, Keystone students individually ranked in the top 50. Mr. Yang hopes the stellar performance by these six students will inspire younger teams at Keystone to work hard and prepare for next year. This is just the beginning, and a big boost for the morale of students and the team spirit of the school. 6 The Keystone Magazine In March 2015, in their very first participation at a regional swimming competition, the Keystone Swim Team won several accolades.
