English with Creative Writing
Key Information
Why study this course?
Balance the study of existing literature with developing your own
writing skills across genres such as poetry, the novel, short fiction,
drama and film.
This course enables you to study English as both a critical and a creative
discipline as you explore classic and contemporary works by other
writers while finding your own voice as a writer. You’ll study literature
from Shakespeare to the present day, with optional modules in subjects
such as medieval, postcolonial, American and Canadian literatures,
and film. You’ll learn about the creative processes and compile your
own portfolios of creative writing. There are opportunities to spend a
semester or a whole additional year at a partner university – which could
be in Europe, Australia, Canada or the USA.

Alexandra Brazier
English with Creative Writing,
Third year
I would definitely praise the English
department, they provide a range
of modules and a lot of support
for students that might need extra
help. I’ve particularly enjoyed being
able to take American Studies
modules as part of my degree too,
and it’s definitely enhanced my
university experience.
