www.keele.ac.uk Nobel Peace Prize candidate Iraq Body Count (IBC), led by members of Keele University, was one of five contenders for the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize. IBC counts the number of violent civilian deaths in Iraq, providing an indicator of national security. Life-saving undergraduate One of Keele’s undergraduates helped to develop a new technique, which was unveiled to experts from around the world, which helps doctors to more rapidly assess the best treatment plans for pulmonary emboli. Measuring black holes Astronomers at Keele helped to discover that the central supermassive black hole of a recently discovered galaxy is 30 times larger than expected. Astrophysicists at Keele are also playing a key role in a world-class project to find extrasolar planets by monitoring hundreds of thousands of stars every night. Top 4% of the world’s leading universities (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015-16) Investigating the Black Death A geophysics team from Keele solved a 660 year old mystery when they investigated London Crossrail’s discovery of a mass grave from the Black Death in the 1300s. Regenerating bone tissue Researchers from Keele helped to discover that magnetic nanoparticles coated with targeting proteins can cause bone to regenerate. It’s great news, because current repair methods are invasive and painful.
