Work placement opportunities
We provide a range of exciting opportunities for you to gain subject
specific work experience during your degree programme. These
include an elective work placement module during the second year
and the option to undertake a work placement year between the
second and final year of your degree. Examples of work placements
that our students have recently undertaken include working with
environmental consultancies and the local council, biodiversity and
conservation work at local nature reserves, and work with Thames
Water and Severn Trent Water.

Field work and study abroad
We place strong emphasis on developing field based and practical
skills and offer a range of residential excursions. Field courses
enable you to put into practice the core practical and investigative
skills necessary for a broad range of careers. Current fieldwork
opportunities include Bordeaux (France), Iceland, southern Spain,
the Lake District and North Wales. You will also have the opportunity
to study abroad through exchange programmes with universities in
different parts of the world including South Africa, Australia, Canada
and North America.
Skills and careers
This degree programme has a strong emphasis on developing
practical, laboratory, employability and field based skills,
enabling you to develop both subject specific and transferrable skills.
It is an ideal foundation for careers in conservation, geo-consultancy
and environmental research, as well as in traditional geographical
employment destinations in industry, government, teaching, and
academic research. Some of our recent graduates have been
successful in gaining employment with companies such as Alstom,
WDE Environmental Consultants and RPS Energy, whilst others have
gone on to study for master’s and PhD programmes.
