Field work and study abroad
We place strong emphasis on developing field-based and practical
skills and offer a range of day and longer residential excursions.
These field courses enable you to put into practise the core
practical and investigative skills necessary for a broad range of
environmentally-related careers. Current fieldwork opportunities
include: North Wales, Bordeaux (France) and the Lake District (UK).
You will have opportunity to study abroad as part of your
degree through exchange programmes with universities in
different parts of the world including South Africa, Australia,
Canada and North America.
Skills and careers
The Applied Environmental Science degree programme is called
‘applied’ because of the strong emphasis we place on developing
practical, laboratory, employability and field-based skills. This
enables you to develop a wide range of both subject-specific and
transferrable skills. All organisations, from private business to local
government, increasingly need to engage with environmental
issues; hence this is one of the fastest growing areas of employment
opportunities. Some of our recent graduates have been successful
in gaining employment with companies such Alstom, WDE
Environmental Consultants and RPS Energy, whilst others have
gone on to study for master’s degree programmes.
Good to know
The Applied Environmental Science programme
at Keele is accredited by the Institution of
Environmental Sciences giving students free
student membership of a professional body and
support in their career development. Our National
Student Survey results consistently outperform
the sector average for the ‘Physical Geography
and Environmental Science’ subject grouping
(93% overall satisfaction in 2014) and we have
an excellent record of graduate employment.
Keele University aims to be one of the top 10
‘sustainable’ university campuses and as such,
you will have a plethora of opportunities to
get involved in University-wide environmental
initiatives including our annual Green Week and
the NUS Green Impact Scheme.
