UNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUS 2016
What type
of degree
should you
choose?
You’re not one-dimensional, so why should your degree
be? We’ve designed our degree structure to give you
maximum flexibility in what you study and how your
degree is shaped.
Dual honours
A dual honours degree is your chance to study two
degree subjects in equal amounts, over three years.
You get the same depth of knowledge in each as
you would if you took it as a single honours degree,
with choices of modules in each subject.
Dual honours broadens your studies and your career
prospects. The great thing is that there is no need
to compromise. You can continue with subjects that
you’ve studied at school or college, or try something
completely new. You can pick a combination that
will lead directly to a career, or have one vocational
subject and one that is more academic, or you
can pick similar subjects or go for two that are
completely different.
You can shape your degree around the things that
interest you most. And we offer the opportunity
to take modules outside of your main degree
subjects to broaden your studies and opportunities
even further.
There are over 600 possible combinations in our
dual honours system.
Major-minor degrees
Major-minor degrees are much like a dual honours
degree, except that you will specialise in the major
subject. In a major-minor degree you will study the
major subject for your three years of study while
the minor subject is only studied in your first and
second year.

Single honours
We offer a number of single honours and professional
training degrees. Each brings together a number of
subject areas so, for example, Business Economics
combines the study of management, economics
and finance, whilst American Studies covers politics,
literature, history and sociology, so even though they
are single honours they aren’t one dimensional.
Undergraduate master’s degrees
We also offer a number of four year undergraduate
master’s degree courses, which combine a three year
single honours course with an additional fourth year
at master’s level. These include MChem, MComp,
MGeoscience, MMath and MPharm.
Degrees awarded
Students are candidates for the degree of Bachelor
of Arts (with Honours) (BA Hons) if their two
principal courses are in humanities and/or social
sciences subjects. All students who study at least
one science subject are candidates for the degree of
Bachelor of Science (with Honours) (BSc Hons).
We award degrees in the following classes:
First Class Honours; Second Class Honours
Division I; Second Class Honours Division II;
Third Class Honours; and Pass. All assessment,
except that in the first year, will contribute to
your final degree classification, with greater
weight being given to your final year modules.
