Learning
a language
Keele’s Language Learning Unit (LLU)
offers you the exciting opportunity to
learn a language alongside your degree.
Whether you are an absolute beginner
or already have some knowledge and
wish to improve, you can join language
modules from beginners to advanced
level in Arabic, French, German, Italian,
Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Russian
and Spanish.
You can take a single semester taster course or
decide to continue with your language studies
over two or three years. Most Keele students taking
a series of language elective modules have
the exciting opportunity to have the language
successfully studied named in the degree title
‘with competency in (Language)’.
Being able to speak a foreign language is a
huge advantage, not only for jobs that will have
international contacts but for all careers, and
the enhanced degree title recognising language
achievement can be a valuable asset to students’ CVs.
Summer language and culture
courses abroad
If you successfully complete one semester of
language study, you will also have the opportunity
to practise and improve your language skills during
the summer vacation, by participating in a summer
study programme at one of our selected partner
universities abroad. Hugely popular language and
culture courses are currently on offer in Japan
(Kyoto), Spain (Madrid), Russia (Tver), France (Lyon)
and Germany (Lüneburg). The courses are typically
two to four weeks long and combine intensive
language training with a wide range of culture
and leisure activities, such as excursions or films
and sports events.
English language classes
Students whose first language is not English also
have access to a range of English language classes
and language support as part of their degree.
For further details, please see page 240.
Certificate in Teaching
English to Speakers of
Other Languages (TESOL)
If you are thinking of travelling after your degree,
why not use your time at Keele to gain a qualification
that will allow you to teach English almost anywhere
in the world? At Keele you have the opportunity
to take practical modules in Teaching English
to Speakers of Other Languages, leading to the
internationally recognised CertTESOL English
language teaching qualification which is accepted
throughout the world. With the CertTESOL, our
graduates have taught English in Thailand, Japan,
