Teaching and assessment
The Environmental Science degree programme at Keele is delivered
by a team of dedicated environmental specialist staff with leading
reputations in their fields and a strong commitment to dynamic
and supportive high quality teaching. The programme combines a
variety of innovative teaching approaches and is designed to ensure
that you are able to develop and demonstrate a wide portfolio of
transferable skills applicable to a range of possible future careers
Fieldwork and study abroad
In the first year all students participate in a residential field course
to North Wales, UK where you will develop field and laboratory
investigation skills across different aspects of environmental science,
including ecology, hydrology, geology and geochemistry. In the
second year, students visit the Bordeaux region of southern France
where they gain practical skills in terrestrial invertebrate trapping,
aquatic invertebrate assessments, vegetation and soil surveys and
water-chemistry assessments. Alternatively, you have the opportunity
to explore sustainable land management as part of a highly
interdisciplinary residential field course in the English Lake District.
There are opportunities for studying abroad, both through exchange
programmes with universities in different parts of the world including
South Africa and Australia, and through carrying out research abroad
as part of the third year independent research project.
Skills and careers
All organisations, from private business to local government,
increasingly need to engage with environmental issues; hence this
is one of the fastest growing areas of employment opportunities.
The BSc Environmental Science degree programme at Keele
offers the added value of the Distinctive Keele Curriculum (DKC),
accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management (iLM).
The DKC develops students’ intellectual, personal and professional
capabilities through both subject-specific and generic workshops
and activities. Through engagement with bespoke sessions, and
completion of a reflective portfolio, students have the opportunity
to gain a professional qualification from the iLM.
