The course
Keele University boasts the longest running foundation year in the
country, being established in 1949. Since then the programme has
flourished and continues to evolve in order to meet the needs of
students from a variety of learning backgrounds. It is highly student
centred and has a fully modular structure. The programme is very
suitable for students from a wide range of backgrounds; around
one third of the total foundation year intake have non-traditional
qualifications.

Key Information
All applicants must meet the University’s general entry
requirements, but you will be given the opportunity to achieve
subject-related requirements during the year. There is a central core
that provides training in generic transferable skills and additional
modules are chosen on an individual basis in consultation with a
personal tutor. A variety of subjects is studied in the foundation
year, including those most closely related to your intended
subsequent degree. Being taught on the university campus by
university staff, the programme introduces you to the style and
pace of a degree course.
Extended degree programme
The foundation year forms the first year of an extended degree
programme (except in the case of the General Foundation Year),
with the Foundation Year being the first (additional) year. In most
cases progression to the following years of the degree is dependent
only on passing the Foundation Year with the required grades.
In the case of the International Foundation Year and the
Accelerated International Foundation Year, the degree plus
Foundation Year is a 1 + 3 programme and you are required to
obtain a new visa after the Foundation Year. However, apart from
that constraint, progression to most degree subjects is automatic,
subject to passing the Foundation Year with the required grades,
via a progression agreement in place between the Foundation Year
and the degree programmes.
