Key Information

Teaching is carried out primarily through lectures, supplemented
by smaller problem solving classes and physics laboratory
sessions. Any scientific computing required is taught within the
relevant modules. There is also support provided outside classes.
Assessment is by a mixture of end of module examinations, class
tests and coursework (typically problem sheets) and, in physics,
by laboratory and project reports.

Skills and careers
A Mathematics and Physics degree is a springboard for many
careers. You will have gained a broad base of scientific and
mathematical knowledge together with much valued versatility in
problem solving and quantitative reasoning. Such a background is
required in scientific research, engineering, management, industry,
software development, health and teaching. In recent years both
mathematicians and physicists have been recruited in the financial
sector. A number of our graduates go on to further study, either at
master’s or PhD level, at Keele or elsewhere.
Membership of professional institutions
The Mathematics and Physics programme is accredited by the
Institute of Physics (IOP). Graduates are eligible for Associate
Membership of the IOP. After a period of relevant work experience
you can apply for full membership of the IOP and, eventually,
Chartered Physicist status.
Good to know
You will be taught by applied mathematicians
and physicists with international reputations.
Both Mathematics and Physics have
consistently achieved excellent ratings in
terms of overall student satisfaction in recent
National Student Surveys.
