You will also carry out an original research project, undertaken
with your tutor’s supervision in history, politics, or both. For most,
the dissertation is the highlight of the degree course and inspires
students to carry on to postgraduate research.
Teaching and assessment
First and second year teaching is based on a mixture of lectures and
group teaching in seminars led by an academic staff tutor. Individual
consultations and feedback sessions help you develop coursework
and revision skills. Third year teaching consists almost exclusively
of seminars, as well as individual supervision and workshops
for dissertations. Assessment is by a combination of written
examinations and continuous assessment, including coursework
essays, portfolios, class participation and the dissertation.
Skills and careers
This programme is a gateway to a wide variety of future careers.
Employers regard both subjects as evidence of an ability to think
critically and to work independently, to make reasoned arguments,
to collaborate with colleagues, to meet deadlines and to present
information effectively. The careers record of Keele History and
Politics graduates is excellent. Some of the common destinations
include political research, think-tanks, journalism, education,
management, the civil service, local government and the voluntary
sector, as well as in the preservation, archival and museum sectors.
Around a quarter of our graduates go on to take higher degrees
with many choosing to stay at Keele.
