Teaching and assessment Teaching focuses on developing your potential for independent thought and intellectual creativity. Most modules are taught through a combination of weekly lectures and seminars. In lectures, you will be encouraged to listen and ask questions, to be curious and to consider conflicting views and theories. In small group seminars, you will engage in discussions and debates facilitated by a tutor. The school guarantees all first year students an hour per week of small group discussion in core modules. We have been praised by our external examiners for having innovative and diverse assessments. You will do coursework that enables you to develop a wide range of skills. Some modules are assessed through a combination of coursework and examination, some are assessed only on written coursework, while in other modules oral presentations and other types of seminar contributions are formally assessed. Skills and careers In the wake of growing awareness of environmental problems like climate change and species extinction, the need to develop environmentally sustainable alternatives to our current way of life is being recognised in both private and public sectors. Many agree that in order to develop alternatives and policies that will work, there is a need for greater understanding of the political, social and ethical dimensions of the environmental crisis. In the UK, we know that the legally binding commitment to reduce carbon emissions (2008 Climate Change Act) presents huge employment opportunities, with as many as 1.3 million people predicted to be working in ‘green jobs’ over the coming decade. A degree in Environmental Studies will give you the tools to be able to critically evaluate the underlying causes of environmental problems and their consequences for society, the economy and for the natural environment. We aim to prepare graduates for jobs in environment related fields as well as for further study towards careers in such fields as environmental policy and management, business, education, journalism, law, diplomacy, and non-governmental organisation/development work. Good to know Our external reviewers said that Keele University is the ‘go to place’ for Environmental Studies in the UK.
