Humanities and Social
Science Research
The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
is a vibrant research community of over
300 postgraduate research students and 200 staff,
hosted in six research centres. We offer a research
intensive, friendly and supportive culture for
postgraduate study, set within a beautiful campus.
The quality of our research environment was
recognised in the most recent Research Excellence
Framework (REF 2014), and we are a member of the
Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) North
West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership.
We offer PhD, MPhil and Professional Doctorate
research degrees, and we have a Graduate Teaching
Assistantship scheme for those interested in developing
their teaching skills alongside their research.
As a postgraduate research student (PGR)
you will benefit from:
• Supervision from leading academic experts, with
strong publication records and, in many cases, a
portfolio of externally funded research projects
• Access to research training, both through specialist
courses provided by the faculty, and through an
extended network of partner universities
• Dedicated internal funding to support attendance
at conferences, events and external research
training in the UK and overseas
• First-class academic resources including a newly
refurbished library, specialist research software on
all PGR student PCs, and a suite of new laptops,
iPads, hand held recording devices and video
cameras available to support your fieldwork and
archival research
• Access to high quality office space, concentrated
in three PGR hubs across the campus
• A vibrant programme of research related events
such as conferences, seminars, workshops,
readings, exhibitions and performances
• Support from a friendly and experienced Faculty
Research Office, with dedicated staff focussed on
assisting you with advice and practical help across
all your activities
• A culture of strong disciplinary research within a
cross-disciplinary environment, and a commitment
to forming partnerships beyond academia
• Membership of a supportive student community:
including the weekly Postgraduate Research Coffee
Mornings, an annual Postgraduate Conference, the
Keele Postgraduate Association which has its own
bar, and the opportunity to take part in social and
developmental activities such as away weekends
