Karen Weaver's Fight for Clean Water November 2017 | Page 42
The Great Lakes hold 20% of the world’s supply of fresh water and putting that at
risk, no matter how small the risk may be, for the benefit and profit of a foreign
company is just not good business for Michigan. A rupture could spill oil across the
Great Lakes, endangering 20% of the world’s fresh water, and the drinking water,
jobs and way of life for 40 million people who rely on the Great Lakes. An oil leak
in the straits, where there are powerful currents, fierce winds and extreme weather
conditions, including winter ice would be disastrous. Any cleanup or recovery
would be extremely difficult.
