COLEMAN YOUNG, JR. DETROIT NEIGHBORHOODS MATTER by Jan Johnson What Coleman Young II loves most about Detroit is its people. “They are the most important aspect of the city”. They know if you work hard, you can be successful. Detroit has a rich history. Detroit was the first American city to hire a female police officer, Marie Owen, in 1893. Detroit can also be proud of the ‘Real McCoy’, Elijah McCoy’s invention providing continual lubrication to trains was revolutionary. Detroit was the last stop on the Underground Railroad, before Canada. Detroit has always been a forward thinking city. In the 20th century, Detroit put the world on wheels, and Woodward was the first paved road. Detroit created the nation’s first highway, first mall and invested in education, building the most expensive school, Cooley High, in 1929, and so much more to be proud of. Detroit also became the home of Rosa Parks. CONT’D
