Finally, in 1964, after completing his apprenticeship, Chewe began working as a tool and die journeyman at the Chevrolet downtown site, referred to as “Chevy in the hole”. He worked for General Motors for 49 years. He is still very loyal to the General Motors Corporation. He only drives American-made vehicles. Mr. Chewe has a heart of gold. On many occasions, he has randomly blessed families and children in grocery stores, by paying for their groceries or simply just giving them money. It was also very common for him to buy ice cream for all the children in his neighborhood when the ice cream truck came through. He even cares for stray animals. Given his father died when he was only 14 years old, Mr. Chewe has a strong faith in God. is a long-time member of Grace Emmanuel Baptist Church. With his incomparable productive and enriching history, Mural Chewe’s modest demeanor is loved and respected by not only his lineage but also those who come to know him. This year, the City of Flint will provide Mural Chewe with a Key to the City, in recognition of his great generosity, love of Flint, and trailblazing for our community.
