Letter From The Editor November 7,2017 will be America’s most important election. Many of us don’t like what’s happening in D.C., and if we are complacent with the status quo on Election Day, we will pass the point of no return. Here is the proof: The Kennedy against Nixon match in 1960 turned out 73% of the voters. In 1980, 65% of Detroit voters turned out for the Reagan-Carter election. The contest between Obama and McCain in 2008 should have brought Detroiters to the voting booth in record numbers, but it didn’t. Only 53% of registered voters turned out. As the number of voters’ trends downward, our elections are being decided by a smaller and smaller percentage of the population. This trend in is hurting average Americans. It certainly hurts Detroit. As Keith Williams said, “Downtown in Johannesburg, and the neighborhoods are Soweto.” Tammy Barbour put it like this, “Democracy is dying a little more every day at the hands of an oligarchic collusion: corruption masked as privatization, marketed as a free market, and as more public dollars are used to enrich private enterprise, less money is available for infrastructure maintenance, public disasters increase, public trust erodes, and people decide their vote doesn’t count. Unfortunately, the fewer people vote, the stronger the oligarchy grows.” That’s deep. Yet, I am not sure that’s it. I never thought I’d witness some of the things I have seen in the last 6 months. So I decided to do my part my giving those of you who want to know more, profiles of some of the interesting personalities running for office. I hope you will do you part and show up at the polls.
