In 1820 the Hudson’s Bay Company
(HBC) opened a post in Kuujjuaraapik
and ten years later opened in Kuujjuaq.
Although the post in Kuujjuaq closed in
1843 it reopened twenty three years later
setting the pattern of opening and closing
posts to obtain the best economic advantage or to overcome competition from
other trading companies. By the early
1900s Revillon Freres had opened posts in
Nunavik and competed with the Hudson’s
Bay Company until 1936 when the HBC
took over their northern operations. The
Baffin Trading Company, a Newfoundland based company opened a number of
trading posts in 1945, after the end of the
war, but they met the same fate and were
bought out by the HBC in 1949.
It was about that time when the Federal
Government began to seriously attempt
finding some solution to the problems
that were beginning to come to the notice
of the Canadian population. These problems included starvation, due to changing
migration routes of the animals, high incidents of tuberculosis among the Inuit and
disease among the dogs. This new awareness of the north was accelerated in 1952
by the publishing of People of the Deer by
Farley Mowat.
In 1950 a federal school had been
opened in Inukjuak and within the next
