There was a man who was out on the
ice in search of seal. Two of his dogs were
with him, helping him locate the breathing
holes of the seals. The two dogs had been
trained for this type of work and knew
what to do but he had them leashed anyway, even though they no longer needed to
be in a leash.
As the man searched for seals he came
across an inugagullik, a tiny dwarf-like
creature known by Inuit, who was apparently hunting for baby seals. The inugagullik was dressed in fox fur. Upon seeing this
inugagullik, the Inuk wished to be friendly
and made an effort to show his kindness.
However, the inugagullik was a fearsome
creature by nature. He turned to the Inuk,
jumped on him and proceeded to try and
suffocate him with his buttocks. He had
jumped up and sat himself on the man’s
face and began squeezing his buttocks to
his mouth and nose in order to suffocate
him.
Though the man made every effort to
remove the inugagullik, he was unable.
When the man fell from exhaustion and
completely unable to breathe, the man’s
dogs came to his aid by fighting off the
inugagullik. The man was saved by his two
dogs who removed the inugagullik from on
top of him and all he could do was watch
as the two dogs fought and killed the inugagullik. All his strength had been sapped
at that point, he could only to watch as the
dogs attacked the inugagullik - he was unable to help him.
Legends
to understand his origins. He managed
to find his tracks and followed them on
his way home. Eventually, he reached the
home of the inugagullik. He could not
pass through the entrances for they were
too narrow and so he spoke to the occupants through the roof, saying, “Your man
has been killed by my dogs as my dogs
are quite malicious”. Those were the only
words he uttered. He waited for a response
but having none he then continued on his
way home.
When he had settled at home and the
evening passed, he thought of returning
to the home of the inugagulliit so that he
could see them. So at first light, he left to
go to the inugagulliit’s home to see how
they were. However, when he arrived to
their home he found that they had left.
They had left by foot so he followed their
tracks for a while.
As he followed their tracks he saw that
they had headed out to the ice, and he
continued following the tracks on the
ice for a while. After a while he could no
longer follow their tracks because they had
continued onto thin ice and that became
dangerous for him. He had to let go of the
idea of meeting them.
The man decided to trace the tracks of
the inugagullik to see where he came from,
