Cet homme était parti à pied , à la recherche de bois d ’ épave sur le rivage ; marchant sur le rivage , il cher chait du bois d ’ épave . Il vit alors , là-bas , au loin sur le rivage , un être mipoisson mi-humain qui se mit à lui faire des signes . Comme on lui faisait des signes , il y alla ; de fait quand il parvint près de lui : « N ’ approche plus ! N ’ approche plus ! Tiens-toi simplement à courte distance !» Ainsi parla l ’ être à moitié poisson . « Mais comment pourrai-je ne pas te toucher , je ne pourrai pas te remettre dans l ’ eau », ainsi parla l ’ homme .
« Pars à la recherche de bois , cherche un morceau de bois , tu essayeras de me mettre dans l ’ eau ; si tu me remets dans l ’ eau , je te récompenserai », c ’ est ainsi qu ’ il parla .
De fait , celui qui cherchait du bois , partit à la re cherche d ’ un morceau de bois qui pourrait lui servir à le remettre dans l ’ eau . Comme l ’ être à moitié pois son était très lourd et reposait au milieu des pierres , il travailla longtemps . De fait , comme il l ’ avait remis dans l ’ eau et qu ’ il lui avait fait atteindre l ’ eau , il se fit dire ainsi , ainsi parla l ’ être à moitié poisson : « Au lever du jour j ’ apporterai ici un tourne-disque , un fusil et une machine à coudre »; il parla ainsi . Alors l ’ être à moitié poisson partit au loin vers le large , dans l ’ eau . L ’ homme , lui , rentre tout simplement chez lui .
Le lendemain , il retourna làbas , sur le rivage , dès le lever du jour , à l ’ endroit où il l ’ avait poussé vers l ’ eau . Effectivement l ’ être à moitié poisson avait apporté sur le rivage un tourne-disque , un fusil et une machine à coudre , mais lui-même ( l ’ être à moitié pois son ) n ’ était plus visible ; l ’ homme vit seulement le tourne-disque , la machine à coudre et le fusil . Alors , nous , les Inuit , nous pensons que tous les Blancs ont appris à faire comme l ’ être à moitié poisson . Voilà l ’ histoire , c ’ est ainsi qu ’ elle s ’ est passée . C ’ est fini , je m ’ arrête parce que c ’ est terminé . •

A
man was out hunting on foot looking for driftwood along the shore . Over in the distance , while still far off , he saw a creature half-fish and half-human on the shore waving to him . As it kept waving , he went over to it . And so when he arrived ,
“ Don ’ t come close . Don ’ t come close ; just stay nearby ,” said the half-fish .
“ Then how can I get you into the water without touching you ?” said the man .
“ You are looking for wood . Find some wood and try to push me out into the water . If you push me out , 1 will reward you ,” it said .
So then , looking for wood , he got some to try to push it out into the water . As it was really stuck fast in the rocks and as the half-fish was very heavy , he worked a long time . When at last he pushed it out in the water , the half-fish said to him :
“ At dawn I will place here a gramophone , a gun , and a sewing machine .”
And so the half-fish went off , far away out there in the water . The man simply went home . Then when dawn came , the man returned to the shore to the spot where he had pushed the creature out to sea . And there on the shore , the half-fish had put a gramophone , a gun , and a sewing machine . But it was nowhere to be seen . The gramophone , the sewing machine , and the gun , just these were found . And so all the white men are learning [ to do as the half-fish did ] we people are thinking . That ’ s the way the story goes ; I stop because it ’ s finished . •
