where she kissed me. I could hear the creaking of the floorboard and the scratch of a chair across wood, then silence. I opened the door and walked the eight blocks to the park, joining the group of people already set up with chairs and sunglasses. I settled in the grass, looking up at the sun for a few second intervals, unable to resist its brightness, its life, its warmth. My eyes lingered sometimes, until I could feel my corneas burning and my vision becoming spotty. I covered my eyes with my hand, rubbing my thumb over my closed lids in order to regain enough strength to look again. I heard everyone’s gasp while I was nursing a stinging set of eyes, and looked up. The moon was starting its descent, covering just enough of the sun for people to notice.
