NICOLE WILSON - featured artwork "Prince" "While music is not my artistic medium (though I play the Ukulele), I do believe that all art forms are connected and parallels can easily be drawn between them. Oftentimes one artistic medium is complimentary to another, and that is why they are so readily paired together. I made my Prince tribute piece because like many people, I felt very moved by him as an artist. He was a singular talent that had the integrity to wholly be himself in his work throughout his long career. His talent and virtuosity within his art form is so supernatural he's almost like a Unicorn. I think the particular brand of genius, self-possession, and staying power that Prince wielded can be felt and recognized by any artist. It is something to be aspired to. And also with equal weight with his passing I am reminded of how his music became the soundtrack to various significant moments in my own life. I remember when I was a kid I had a Walkman, and one of the first cassettes I purchased myself was Prince's 'Purple Rain'; I listened to it on repeat walking around the streets of NYC where I grew up. Many years later I remember listening to 'Kiss' as I was driving through the Hollywood Hills with my boyfriend, very much in love for the first time. Music is one of those mediums that can instantly transport you to a different time and place with all the nostalgia and sentimentality that entails. I think part of the grief people feel when an icon such as Prince is lost is related to the death of part of themselves. A place or time, that is gone forever. What's so lovely about Prince's music is that many more people and generations will have the opportunity to create memories around and enjoy it, and in this way Prince can live forever through what he loved most, his music. www.nicolewilson.org www.facebook.com/nicolewilsonart www.twitter.com/NicolewilsonNY www.instagram.com/nicolewilsonart www.society6.com/NicoleWilson
