Cambodia: The Comeback Kingdom
My interest in Cambodia was sparked by my CambodianAmerican friend, Sovong, whose story appears on
pages 10-13. I met him last year when he temporarily
lived in a flat across the street from me in London. His ready smile
hides an inner resilience which I find inspiring.
Speaking with Kitty, we decided we would get involved with
raising money for Cambodia. Under the yoke of a strict
government, Cambodians are heavily reliant on tourism for
survival and in need of foreign aid. NGO’s such as Anjali House
(supported by author Sue Guiney, interview on pages 24-27)
provide an invaluable service in the lives of ordinary families.
Everyone says Cambodia is an amazing country to visit and that
the experience will affect you. Having taken her family to Cambodia
in April of 2012 (see page 34-35), Kitty waxes enthusiastic about
the country.
We hope this issue of Just Go Places inspires you to visit
Cambodia and learn more about this country which has been
beset by tragedy and warfare for the last few generations.
People can be unbelievably cruel to each other, but they can also
be incredibly kind and generous. Here at Just Go Places we hope
to unveil fundraising opportunities for Cambodian charities,
including Anjali House. Watch this space!
