Coastal Fishing Concepts Here we GO !

Summer is here and the fishing has really been what I would consider a bumper year . Summer patterns are falling right into place , and it seems that the rest of the year will follow suit . As water temperatures increase , speckled trout and redfish will start transitioning daily with the increase of the surface temperatures . Migrations of shrimp have made their way to the interior marshes , and the predator fish are right behind them . As summer sets in , all anglers should begin to look for certain key variables that will come together to create the formula for success .
Understand that fish follow bait and wherever you find bait , you normally will catch fish . It seems like a pretty simple formula , but it also seems that most anglers want to believe this but never actually follow it . Now , how do you find bait easily ? Well , it might seem hard to do ; but in all actuality , it is very simple . First thing - if you are looking for shrimp , the fastest way is by Capt . Charlie Thomason
Bayou Charters ( 504 ) 278-FISH to look for the shrimp boats . Most of the time where you find multiple shrimp boats , there are shrimp in the area and fish to be caught . Pogies can be some of the hardest to find ; but once you do , it is crazy how many fish are around the schools . This is the time that you look for slicks . Feeding predatory fish will regurgitate the pogies and cause a slick on the water , throw in that slick and hold on ! Also , the majority of the time during the summer , brown pelicans will be diving on pogies ; and if you witness this happening , it might be a good opportunity to find feeding fish . Now mullet can be found simply by seeing them jumping out of the water in a continuous line or rafting on the surface feeding on small plankton and algae . Many times larger redfish , trout , jacks , and sharks will hang in and around these rafting mullet , and a large topwater will produce amazing explosive strikes .
Clean water is something that becomes more accessible this month . With lower winds and larger tides , good clear water from the Gulf flows in and offers predator fish the ability to feed by sight . Sound and vibrations are always the key senses that fish use to feed , but sight is the sense that allows predators to increase their strike zones when feeding . When water is dirty , we fish near structures or reefs because we know these hold fish ; and coupling this with sound devices like TheFishCall . com and / or the VersaMaxx popping cork system will increase your catch because fish are attracted to the sounds , but you must fish close to the structures for success . When the water is clear , fish tend to swim further from structures increasing their feeding areas . But with clearer waters , you should also understand that presenting baits that look extremely natural are a must . As a charter guide , I find the clearer the water , the more I use live bait as my main source of bait . I also exclusively use FINS
