A Step Above Sometimes you can tell the quality of a person’s character by the qualities they admire in others. This is absolutely true of West Career and Technical Academy valedictorian Alissa Till, who speaks fondly of her sister’s “incredible dedication, determination to succeed and kindness toward all.” In the years to come, she is looking forward to serving her country through the U.S. Air Force, seeking adventure and the exploration of new ideas, places and cultures. Above all else, she looks to emulate those who inspire her, set a positive example for others and continue to work on being a well-rounded, conscientious human being, and for that, Alissa Till is– A Step Above. After completing my undergraduate studies, I plan to attend graduate school studying law or medicine.” What motivates you to participate in community service? “Being a leader of a service organization and mentoring elementary school children has been extremely fulfilling. I feel like I am contributing to a cause much bigger than myself as well as improving my little corner of the world.” How do you stay competitive and achieve all you set out to? “My priority has always been to just focus on doing my very best in all that I do and take each day one at a time. Success becomes the sum of all the daily efforts added up.” What’s a valuable lesson you’ve learned through experience? “I have had people in my life who have made me second-guess myself. I have learned the importance of nurturing positive relationships and sur- rounding myself with those who support me and always have my back. We should never give up and lose sight of our goals and aspirations, and, at the same time, always support the dreams of others.” July/August 2017 2017 Alissa Till 41
