samples of our own thinking
and actions first, observing
them in order to determine if
they bring value or destruction.
Cultures, knowingly or
unknowingly, willingly or
unwillingly, guide our individual
and collective belief systems
and can either enhance or
destroy the life of an individual,
a family, or a society. We have
seen it countless times. It is
important that we examine and
re-examine everything around
us in order to determine its true
value to us all.
When we define ourselves
solely by the cultures we
encounter, we slowly begin to
limit our understanding of our
greater potentials, and before
too long, anger over so many
controls spills out into our
families and our communities.
On any given day we interact
with cultural norms that attempt
to define our choices, redirect
our passions, and deaden
our sense of self. There are a
plethora of cultures that mold
us, often before we realize it.
Our ethnicity, our workplace,
our neighborhoods, our
gender, our beliefs about one
another as well as ourselves
have systematically separated
us to the degree that we have
forgotten that we are in this life
together.
We can no longer point only
to the past as the cause of our
problems, for we are in the
midst of them now and now
is our time for action. When
we follow patterns of thinking
and actions that have been put
in place by others, and when

these patterns, both overt
and implicit, demand their
expectations (of a particular
organization, group, country,
religion, ethnicity, or business to
which we belong) be adhered
to, then we are destined to fail
on multiple levels. Many times
we encounter guidelines that
can, and often do, override our
better judgment and before we
know it we have conformed.
There are cultures of violence
and abuse, and there are
cultures of silence and fear.
There are cultures of winner
takes all, and there are cultures
of averting our eyes from those
in need. And, thankfully, there
are also cultures of compassion,
and cultures of moving forward
in greater understanding of
our potentials. We are led
by cultures that ought to be
examined through a researcher’s
lens and cultured in a petri dish,
so we might learn the cause in
order to eradicate old beliefs so
we might find lasting solutions
to global challenges. But, much

The culture of politics has
become barbaric, as corrosive
rhetoric is routinely hurled in
the direction of an opponent
or party in an effort to bring
one cultural force to bear
against another, in the hopes
of bringing home the golden
key of political advantage
on election day. While much
attention is brought to
the antics of a few, deeply
meaningful and important
problems are overshadowed by
the culture of our times.
It is time for us to become a
cultured society, one in which all
people are required to care for
the betterment of the collective,
our planet, and those who
cannot care for themselves.
