friend recently shared that food is like
a “warm blanket” to her. That is, it’s her
comfort and solace when she feels sad,
lonely, or low. I get that. For most of my life, food
has been a source of comfort rather than just of
nourishment. When life seems to spin out of control,
the one thing I can count on being able to control
is exactly what goes in my grocery bag, on my fork,
and in my mouth.
It took years for me to figure out that this wasn’t
solely emotional eating. Other contributors were the
high-carb, low fat school of thought many of us grew
up with, and the way our foods are made to have the
addictive qualities of irresistible combinations of fat,
sugar, and salt. When put together, emotional eating
and poor diet led to a truly vicious cycle of weight
gain and loss, confidence and frustration.
Learning this was one of the most empowering
lessons I ever embraced, and this knowledge was
the starter fuel that helped me get control of my
weight and to release about thirty-five pounds
several years ago.
Maintaining a healthy weight was simple as long as
I followed the rules that worked best for me. Not
only did I have great energy and minimal aches and
pains, a sign of reduced inflammation, but my blood
